In this example we have Alice playing a warrior called Atania, who is fighting against an unnamed royal guard. This is a long example, but it will showcase practically every combat situation you can find. Their relevant stats are below. Note the pre-calculated half and fifth values for skills.

Alice: Atania approaches the first guard and swings her two-handed sword at him. For now I'll attack and parry as normal.

Narrator: Okay. He will start balanced, too. He will parry instead of dodge because his weapon skill is higher.

Atania rolls 29 (solid success) and the guard rolls 47 (regular success). Atania hits her target. She rolls a damage of 5 but the guard rolls armour 1. That means 4 points of damage. The guard stands now at 9 hit points.

Narrator: Good one. The guard attacks back.

The guard rolls 32 (regular success), and Atania rolls 41 for parry (also a regular success). When both rolls have the same type of success, parry/dodge wins.

Narrator: Damn! Atania parries the guard's attack. I think I'm in trouble.

Alice: Here I go again, let's have another go.

Atania rolls 13 (extreme success), and the guard rolls 51 for parry (failure). As it's an extreme success, Atania gets the maximum damage of her weapon (8 because two-hand sword has 2D4 damage) without rolling. The guard rolls a 2 for armour. That means 6 points of damage, which leaves the guard with 3 hit points. He's badly wounded (has less than half of his hit points left), and all physical action rolls from now on get a penalty die. Luckily for him he got 6 and not 7 points of damage: losing over half of the points in one go would have meant a major wound.

Narrator: Ouch! The guard is barely able to stand, but he will keep trying to attack, hoping that some backup will come and help him.

The guard has now a penalty die because he has less than half of the hit points left. That means rolling one extra die for the tens and picking the worst combination. Despite this, he still rolls a pretty good 33 (regular success), but unfortunately for him Atania rolls 66 for parry (regular success). Atania parries successfully again.

Alice: Go, Atania! Things are going well, so I'm going to switch to an aggressive style of combat. That will give me the chance to hit twice in the round.

Atania rolls 89 (failure), so the guard doesn't even need to roll for defense. Now that Atania is fighting aggressively, though, the guard's attack will be a little different.

Narrator: Phew! The guard breathes heavily and tries again, still with the penalty die.

The guard rolls a 48 (regular success), and Atania rolls a 62 (also regular success). Now, as Atania is being aggressive and not parrying but attacking a second time, the tie means that the guard hits her. The guard rolls 4 damage and Atania rolls 2 in armour, so she gets 2 points of damage. If Atania had gotten a better type of success, she would have inflicted damage, not the guard.

Narrator: Ha, take that! So much for fighting aggressively!

Alice: Yeah, yeah, check this out. I'll keep fighting aggressively by the way.

Atania rolls a 33 (solid success), and the guard rolls a 79 (failure). Atania rolls 6 damage and the guard rolls 1 in armour, so he gets 5 points of damage. The guard dies before Atania even has the chance to try a second attack.

Narrator: Okay. Good job! I have bad news for you, though. Your brother was fighting some other guard and the guard just got a critical! Your brother lost a hand and is in a very bad situation right now.

Alice: Oh, no! What's the mental stability loss?

Narrator: It's 1D6 if you pass, or 1D6+6 if you fail.

60

51 mental stability points

Atania rolls a 71 (failure), and a 3 for the stability loss. Atania loses a total of 9 points of mental stability. From now on, mental stability rolls will be done against 51, not the original 60. If Atania drops to 30 or less mental stability points (half of her original rating), she will be in shock and have one penalty die in every skill roll until she recovers.

Alice: I run towards my brother to try to save him.

Narrator: Very well, but another guard stands between you and him.

Alice: Agh! I fight aggressively until he's out of the way.

Atania rolls a 08 (critical success) and the second guard rolls a 90 (failure). Atania gets maximum damage again without rolling (8). The guard rolls 1, so he receives 7 points of damage. As he loses over half his hit points in one attack, that's considered a major wound. Atania rolls a 79, which means concussion and head injury. He will also have a penalty die for physical skill rolls from now on.

Narrator: Heh, this is not going to last long, is he? He will go defensive now: no attacks, but a bonus die that will cancel the penalty die he has. So regular rolls for defense for him. Go ahead.

Atania rolls a 67 (regular success) and the second guard rolls a 62 (failure). Atania rolls 5 damage and the guard rolls another 1 for armour, meaning he gets 4 points of damage.

Narrator: The second guard can barely stand, but you see how the third guard is about to kill your brother.

Alice: Oh, no! I'll throw my sword to try to hit the guard, or at least grab his attention and win a bit of time.

Narrator: But, you have a two-handed sword! There's no way you can throw it hard enough to do damage, you're still too far.

Alice: It doesn't matter, I'm trying to grab his attention. I'm using my complication "Hot-headed".

Narrator: Okay, sounds good. You will be standing without a weapon against two armed guards, and more are coming. That's a pretty bad situation so I'll give you all 3 drama points. You're going to need them.

At this point Alice could use each drama point to give Atania a bonus die. Note that she can roll normally first, and then use a drama point only if she wants a bonus die to try to improve the outcome!
